After twelve years after its release in 2009, Avatar is once again at the number one spot for the highest grossing films in history. As CNN points out, this return to the forefront of the science fiction blockbuster directed by James Cameron is explained by its re-release in theaters in China since Friday, March 12, allowing its revenue to have exceeded 2.8 billions of dollars. Building on this success with the Chinese public, Avatar is therefore passed in front Avengers : Endgame, who had dethroned him in 2019 with his $ 2.797 billion in revenue. Titanic, also directed by James Cameron in 1997, completes the podium ($ 2.471 billion in revenue)
Celebrating this feat, the producer of the American film, Jon Landau, referred to a “milestone” in a statement. “We are proud to have taken this important step, but Jim (James Cameron) and I are very happy that the film is back in theaters in these unprecedented times and we would like to thank our Chinese fans for their support” a- he explained in comments relayed by the American channel. For their part, the directors of Avengers : Endgame, Joe et Anthony Russo, did not fail to show themselves beautiful players by congratulating James Cameron on his return to the top step of the podium, with a photo posted on their Instagram account.
Delayed several times due in particular to the coronavirus epidemic, the release of Avater’s next opus is now scheduled for December 2022. In September 2020, James Cameron revealed that the shooting ofAvatar 2 was finished and that ofAvatar 3 was in the process of being. A fourth film in this science fiction saga is also in the works.
