Average price of airline tickets in 2022 is the highest in 12 years, according to a survey

The average cost of an air ticket in Brazil in 2022 is R$605.04, the highest in the country in the last 12 years. The numbers are from a survey of the CNN from the panel of the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac).

The data involve costs of tickets issued between January and May of this year and present an increase of 16.9% in relation to the same period last year.

The value was only surpassed by the average tariff in 2009, when the average cost, corrected by the IPCA, was R$ 682.76.

The numbers for May 2022 were close to those recorded in that period: R$ 682.60. That was the highest figure for a month since December 2012.

The highest average fare is in Roraima, where the value reaches four digits: R$ 1,079.42.

Then come Acre (R$966.36) and Rondônia (R$864.49). The cheapest are in Espírito Santo (R$ 539.08) and Paraná (R$ 542.82).

In 17 Brazilian states, the average values are above the national average (R$ 605.04).

The Domestic Air Fare Indicator Panel, Anac’s online platform, shows that 55% of the tickets had an average accumulated price between R$300 and R$1,000.

The remainder is divided between two other classifications: 29.9% up to BRL 300 and 15.1% over BRL 1 thousand.

Analyzing only the month of May, Roraima recorded the highest average cost: R$ 1,235.44. The smallest was found in Santa Catarina: R$ 560.75.

In May, according to the platform, the highest average fare per airline was that of Azul, with a cost of BRL 777.75. The value represents an increase of 2.8% compared to April.

Then comes Gol, with an average real fare of R$ 641.89. The number reflects a drop of 6.5% compared to the previous month. Finally, TAM, whose cost was R$ 620.62 in May.

Number represents means high of 10.3% in relation to the fourth month of the year.

The increase is explained by the growth in demand for flights, which has been approaching the pre-pandemic period, and the rise in aviation kerosene prices.

From January to July, fuel has already increased by 70.6%, according to estimates by the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear). Anac estimates that the product accounts for about 36% of all airline costs in Brazil.

The figures corroborate an estimate by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), made at the request of CNN at the end of June.

At the time, the entity indicated that the price of tickets would continue to increase in the coming months, due to the market situation.
