The Government of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) confirmed that the deaths of swans and ducks in the Sapucaia do Sul Zoo, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, also occurred by aviary flu.
Initially the suspicion was 38 animals killed, but the State Secretariat Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi) reported that there are at least 90 occurrences.
On Monday (12), samples were collected from the died birds and also from the water of the lakes in which they lived. The material was sent to test, whose positive result was released this Friday.
The zoo is closed for visitation. Initially, there was a forecast of reopening this Saturday. However, with the diagnosis of avian flu, standardization should be delayed.
According to the zoo technical staff, ducks and swans of different species died suddenly without specific symptoms. Veterinarians monitor the health of other animals.
Gaucho government authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) explained that the procedure with wild waterfowl differs from the adopted in the Montenegro (RS) farm, the first focus of the disease.
Surviving animals in the zoo, for example, are not sacrificed, only isolated, which had already been done even before the confirmation of the result.
The distance between the two cities is about 50 kilometers. Although the priority is to investigate areas located within 10 kilometers from the farm, Sapucaia also entered the sights after the death of the animals.
