Away from home: the beauty of having roommates

Sharing a house with roommates isn’t always easyIndeed: it is an experience that would put anyone to the test. Even the Dalai Lama would risk breaking down if he were forced to share a bathroom with someone who never takes his hair out of the shower, and I’m sure Gandhi would not have preached non-violence if he had to wash the dishes left in the sink by others.

Yet, although the negative aspects are many and undeniable, roommates also have advantages. Do not you believe it?

To begin with, living together means sharing, especially when it comes to food. If there is someone with an empty fridge, someone else is ready to give them a saving can of tuna; the pastry enthusiast bakes cakes upon cakes to brighten everyone’s breakfasts and snacks; when a “pack from down” arrives, including mozzarella, taralli and salami, the whole house is celebrating.

And, to stay on the subject, another pro are the dinners that are organized on a regular basis. A birthday, the end of the exam session (whether it went well or badly is not relevant), the arrival of Christmas … There is always a reason to celebrate. And even if it’s not there, who cares: what matters is to sit together around the table, with something good on the plate and glasses full of wine.

In addition to the moment of fun, the roommates will be there in that of need, ready to cook you a hot broth when you get a fever or to offer you a shoulder to cry on after a disappointment in love or an exam gone wrong. In short, having roommates means never being alone: just cross the corridor to have someone to chat with, let off steam or have a laugh.

Even if you are miles away from your home, family and friends, your flatmates will be your point of reference (and you their): until recently you were complete strangers, now you are friends, even a family. And as in any family, we fight, we make peace, we love each other and we take care of each other. I mean, this roommate thing isn’t too bad.
