Away from the cinema, Meg Ryan turns 60; remember your movies

The extensive and striking filmography built over the 1980s and 1990s led Meg Ryan to achieve the fame of “queen of romantic comedy”. Long away from Hollywood, the actress turns 60 this Friday (19). She avoided the spotlight for years, when she focused on her personal life and her relationship with her children, Jack Quaid (29), from her marriage to actor Dennis Quaid, and Daisy True Ryan (17), adopted by the actress in 2005.

However, it is possible to find out about Meg on her Instagram profile, where she occasionally posts photos, and in rare public appearances, such as at the amfAR gala, a charity event of the Foundation for AIDS Research, which took place in November, in New York.

Meg Ryan’s distance from Hollywood resulted from the actress’ long process of discomfort with the implications of the “America’s Sweetheart” label. Due to her success in romantic comedy films at the beginning of her career, Meg had little acceptance from critics and the public when playing characters that escaped the good-girl archetype.

Also in 2009, in an interview with the American magazine Instyle, Meg stated: “I understood that it was a compliment for being adorable. But I also felt that ideas were being projected onto me that had nothing to do with me. I never felt like a very conventional person.”

In an interview with the New York Times Magazine, in 2019, Meg talked about her participation in the film “Em Carne Viva” (2003), a thriller with sex and nudity scenes that generated controversy and strong criticisms of the actress. For her, the role played in the production was a turning point in her career that led her to move away from Hollywood. “I think the feeling was mutual. When I got tired, they also got tired, probably”, he said.

In 2015, Meg Ryan made her directorial debut with the drama “Ithaca”, an adaptation of the novel “The Human Comedy” (1943), by William Saroyan. In production, she also starred opposite Tom Hanks and son Jack Quaid.
