Axie Infinity developers: Hackers posted fake Discord messages on behalf of the project

Representatives of the gaming blockchain project Axie Infinity reported that as a result of a cyber attack, attackers were able to hack into the project’s Discord account and post fake messages there.

Project uncovered information about the cyberattack on Wednesday, May 18. The developers reported that as a result of the actions of an unknown person, the MEE6 bot was compromised. Using the MEE6 bot, hackers hacked into the project’s main Discord server and increased the access level for a fake account called Jiho. Then they published fake announcements on behalf of the project about the release of NFT.

The developers reported that they were able to remove the compromised MEE6 bot from the main project server and fake messages from Discord. However, users may still see the fake message until they restart their Discord.

Representatives of Axie Infinity claim that the compromise of MEE6 is not a new phenomenon, many projects have already faced similar problems. The official MEE6 Discord support channel denied the allegations of a hack and stated that they checked with their engineers and found no malicious activity.

Twitter users expressed different versions of the cyberattack scenario. Many believe that hackers first hacked into the administrator account and then hid this compromised account. This helped them send fake messages.

So far, no user of Axie Infinity has complained about the damage from a cyber attack. The developers did not say whether they would contact blockchain security companies or law enforcement agencies in connection with the incident.

In April, the developers of the Ronin Network sidechain involved in the game Axie Infinity reported a hacker attack during which the attackers managed to crack the private keys and steal 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC.
