Ayrton Senna: discover five documentaries that tell the pilot’s story

The first images and teaser for “Senna”, a Netflix miniseries that will tell the story of Brazilian Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, were released this Tuesday (30).

The news about the production starring Gabriel Leone (“Dom” and “Ferrari”) was made available by the streaming service one day before the 30th anniversary of the death of the three-time world champion driver, on Wednesday (1st).

Netflix's production will join a large number of series and films that have dedicated themselves to telling Ayrton Senna's story from different angles. Do you want to know a little about this universe? A CNN separated five of the main documentaries about the life of the driver who played for major teams, such as Williams, McLaren and Lotus.

See the list below:

“Senna: The Brazilian, The Hero, The Champion” (2010)

The film by Asif Kapadia, winner of the Oscar for Best Documentary for “Amy” in 2016, is perhaps the most acclaimed documentary about Senna and focuses on his rivalry with Alain Prost and leaders of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

The work won the Bafta in the categories of Best Documentary and Best Editing.

Available for rent on Apple TV+, Google Play, Claro Video and Prime Video.

“A Star Called Ayrton Senna” (1998)

The documentary released about Senna after his death is by Jean Claude Guiter, who had already made “Ayrton Senna: Racing Is In My Blood”, in 1992.

The work features previously unpublished interviews with the driver and shows the social work of the Ayrton Senna Foundation in Brazil.

“The Right To Win” (2004)

The documentary by Dutch filmmaker Hans Pool tells the story of Ayrton Senna based on interviews given by drivers who rivaled him on the track, such as Damon Hill and Alain Prost. Jo Ramírez, team principal at McLaren while Prost and Senna were racing there, also gives his testimony.

“Senna 30 Years: The Day That Hasn’t Yet Ended” (2024)

Marking the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death, Roberto Cabrini produced a special program for PlayPlus and Record TV. The journalist covered the driver's career, following the three-time world champion to the hospital where he was taken after his accident at the 1994 San Marino GP.

The production, which also features images from Cabrini's personal archive and never-before-seen moments from Senna, is available on PlayPlus, Record TV's streaming service.

“Senna by Ayrton” (2024)

“Senna por Ayrton” is the documentary series that Globoplay produced and will launch on Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of the Brazilian driver’s death. The product was put together by TV Globo's Sports Documentaries Center and promises to tell Senna's story in the first person with the help of archive images.
