Azerbaijan: Accuses Armenia of shelling near Nagorno-Karabakh

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry accused Armenia’s Armed Forces of shelling its own army positions near the disputed enclave Nagorno Karabakhaccording to Russian state news agency TASS.

The ministry clarified that its forces returned artillery fire against its positions in the areas of Lachin and Kalbazar, west of the enclave.

For its part, its Ministry of Defense of Armenia denied the accusation that there were artillery shots against Azeri military positions.

The conflict over control of his pouch Azerbaijancontrolled by Armenians since the 1990s, escalated again in the fall of 2020, when a 44-day war broke out during which Azeri forces took control of several sectors.

The two sides have agreed to work on a peace plan following a Russian-brokered ceasefire deal, but Baku and Yerevan periodically accuse each other of ceasefire violations along the border.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held separate phone calls with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on Monday in an attempt to boost efforts to restore peace.
