Azerbaijan authorities today arrested two journalists from the local branch of the Russian state news agency Sputnik, in a move that may further trigger tensions with Moscow after arrests in Russia of people of Azeri descent who are considered by Russian authorities. In a statement, Azerbaijan’s interior ministry said that an investigation into the Sputnik Azerbaijan agency was launched after a raid on his offices earlier today. The Russian State News Agency RIA said two members of the staff – the head of the editorial committee and the editor -in -chief – were arrested. Azerbaijan’s interior ministry posted a video showing officers driving two men handcuffed to van police. Tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan, a former Soviet Republic in the South Caucasus, increased in recent days after the arrest of six people in the city of Yekaterinburg, a Russian industrial city, after a series of raids in homes that are considered suspicious for houses.
