An explosion took place at a nightclub in the early hours of today in Baku, resulting in a fire that claimed the life of one person and injured 31, the Associated Press reported.
The blast is believed to have been caused by a gas leak and an investigation is under way, the AP quoted an Interior Ministry spokesman as saying.
“Very sad news of losses as a result of an explosion at a club in central Baku,” US Ambassador Kazar Ibrahim wrote on Twitter. “Condolences and prayers”.
Twenty-four of the injured were taken to hospital, most with burns, a health ministry spokesman said, according to the AP.
Ambulance services were called to the nightclub at 3 p.m. (02:00 Greek time) and extinguished the fire before it spread, AP reported, citing a statement from the fire department.
