Azerbaijan: does not recognize Armenia’s territorial integrity without agreement on lines

LAST UPDATE: 13:20

Azerbaijan will refuse to recognize Armenia’s territorial integrity if it does not sign a peace agreement along the lines proposed by Baku, President Ilham Aliyev said on Friday, according to Interfax news agency, Reuters reported.

Aliyev called for negotiations on a peace treaty with Armenia soon, but said Yerevan should drop any territorial claims against its country.

The President of Azerbaijan stated that the two former Soviet republics, which waged their last major war in 2020, could quickly reach an agreement if Armenia accepted the lines set by its country.

“Armenia must formally recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, as well as the fact that it has no territorial claims against Azerbaijan and will not have them in the future,” he said.

Otherwise, “we will not recognize the territorial integrity of Armenia, we will officially announce it,” he said.

There was no immediate reaction from the Armenian side.

At least 6,500 people were killed in the 2020 war, the latest resurgence of a conflict dating back to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The conflict ended when Russia intervened and sent peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh, which is located inside Azerbaijan but hosted about 150,000 Armenians before the last round of fighting.
