Police in Azerbaijan today arrested journalist Ulviya Ali, as reported by local media, amid a continuing criminal case against six of her colleagues working on the independent Meydan television channel. Azerbaijan’s media reported that Ali had been in custody for a month as suspected of smuggling. She denies each category. Several other journalists have been accused of smuggling in recent months, a category they are rejecting as politically motivated and say it aims to silence critical voices. Azerbaijan -rich in oil has rejected Western criticism of arrests, saying that statements by Western diplomats and human rights defense groups seeking to release activists and journalists are equivalent to intervening in the judicial system.
