Azerbaijan has released eight Armenian prisoners in a bid to facilitate talks between the two countries, mediated by France and the European Union, European Council President Charles Michel announced on Monday.
“The release by Azerbaijan and the extradition to Armenia of eight Armenian prisoners is another example of the positive developments following the meeting between Macron, Ilhan Aliyev and Nicole Pasinian,” Charles Michel wrote on Twitter.
“The EU supports the stability and prosperity of the region,” he added.
As French President Emmanuel Macron later said, according to Reuters, his country sent an aircraft to pick up and transport the former prisoners to their country.
In October 2020, Azeri troops ousted Armenian forces off the territory they had controlled since the 1990s, both in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, with the two countries concluding a ceasefire with Russian intervention.
In November of that year, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia signed a ceasefire agreement in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that lasted more than a month.
