Azov members detained in Donetsk and face death penalty

Ukrainian fighters of Azov’s order who surrendered after fighting in Mariupol will be tried and face the death penalty, an official from the Donetsk Autonomous Region said today.

“All the prisoners of war are in the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic,” Yuri Sirovatko, the “Minister of Justice” of this self-proclaimed “democracy,” told Russian television.

“More specifically, we have 2,300 prisoners of war from Azovstal,” he said, adding that the “Azov is considered a terrorist organization” and that all its members would be investigated for trial. “In our case, such criminals are punished with the last sentence, the death penalty,” he concluded.

The last defenders of Mariupol surrendered to the Russian forces on May 16-20, after fierce battles that lasted three months. Russian authorities have branded Azov fighters, a battalion founded by Ukrainian nationalists, “neo-Nazis” and suggest they will be treated as war criminals, not prisoners of war.

On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Solz called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to release the prisoners.
