B. Kikilia meetings with ambassadors for the extension of the tourist season

The Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, held successive meetings with the Ambassador of Sweden, Johan Borgstam, and Ambassador of Norway, Frode Overland Andersen, on the afternoon of Tuesday 2/8, as part of the strategy implemented with the aim of further extending the tourist season.

The Minister of Tourism discussed and exchanged views with the two ambassadors, regarding the planning to attract travelers from northern and central European countries, for the coming autumn and early winter.

As Mr Kikilias explained, the targeting of Northern European pensioners is based on the reasoning that in these countries the cold starts as early as September, so Scandinavians, Germans and even the French can spend the autumn and early winter in our country, combining the beneficial – the amounts they will spend on heating in their countries will be more than their accommodation costs in Greece – with the negative, as they will have the opportunity to get to know beautiful areas of our country and enjoy the unique gastronomy and Greek hospitality.

The Swedish ambassador called this alternative proposal for “extending holidays” interesting, pointing out that already in his country, where the heating is electric, the electricity bill paid by an average family in December amounts to around 1900 euros.

In a post made on Twitter by Mr. Bogstram after the meeting with the Minister of Tourism, he said that they shared thoughts on promoting the extended stay of travelers from countries with a cold climate in Greece, whom V. Kikilias invites to enjoy the sun, saving money on energy.

For his part, the Norwegian ambassador argued that it is also a good idea to attract those who have not yet retired, but are at an age when their children have grown up and left the family home, so in this period of their lives they want to travel, even for a weekend or 4 days, as long as they work. For these travelers, cities in Greece – such as Athens or Thessaloniki – are ideal destinations, as they have developed significantly in recent years and combine gastronomy and entertainment with arts, history and culture.
