B. Kikilias: We are going for record revenues in tourism – We will surpass 2019

“More than 1,000,000 visitors from abroad are expected every week”, the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias states in an interview with “Proto Thema”, stressing that “Greece will experience an unprecedented August in terms of income and arrivals”.

“We will make a fund at the end of the season, however if things go relatively smoothly, tourism revenue will exceed 2019 revenue” he typically underlines, noting that this increase in the tourism product feeds hundreds of professions and supports the average Greek family.

Mr. Kikilias gives important data that reflect the dynamic growth in tourism, especially from the large tourist markets. The top two markets for inbound tourism – Germany and Britain – in July 2022 are moving above July 2019 in many destinations such as Rhodes, where the Germans are at +24.6% and the British at +21%, and the Chania with German visitors at +78.3% and the British at +43.2%.

At the same time, in “Eleftherios Venizelos” in July 2022 compared to July 2019 there were 29% more arrivals from Germany, from France 15%, from Israel 19%, from Serbia 257% and from Turkey 177%.

“The tourist season in Greece has started earlier than ever and we are working hard to finish it by the end of 2022”, underlines Mr. Kikilias pointing out that this “expansion of the season will happen for the first time, it brings many new records for the Greek tourism and it is not on autopilot”.

In terms of attracting Northern European pensioners to help extend the tourist season the tourism minister talks of a “coordinated effort by all tourism operators”, announcing a targeted campaign and a series of contacts with major international tourism players in Germany, Austria, France and Sweden.

Finally, regarding domestic tourism, he emphasizes that “by the decision of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, we doubled the amount and the number of beneficiaries of “Tourism for All” to 400,000, giving a total of over 100,000,000 euros for 3 programs in yet another practical support for the average Greek families, professionals and employees of the tourism industry, making the process much easier for both the beneficiaries and the hotels and accommodations”. “In this way, at the same time, we strengthen our effort to extend the tourist season, to stimulate winter tourism, for the city break, for tourism all year round”, says Mr. Kikilias.
