B. Macedonia: US and EU welcome compromise with Bulgaria

The EU and the US welcomed the approval, by the Parliament of North Macedonia, of the EU’s proposal for the Skopje-Sofia compromise.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated North Macedonia for approving the EU proposal.

“Congratulations to North Macedonia on the vote which now paves the way for the start of accession negotiations soon. It was a historic opportunity and it was seized. A big step on your way to a European future. Your future” wrote Ursula von der Leyen in her social media post.

“The United States welcomes the decision by North Macedonia’s parliament to take the next step on the country’s path to EU membership,” said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“We recognize the difficult dimensions reached by this compromise, which recognizes and respects the cultural identity of North Macedonia and the Macedonian language. This decision comes at a critical time for North Macedonia, the Western Balkans and Europe. A European “A union that includes all of the Western Balkans, including Albania and North Macedonia, will be stronger and more prosperous. Now is the time to build new momentum and work on the next steps,” added the US Secretary of State.

With the approval of this EU proposal, Albania’s European path is also “unblocked”, as the EU’s decision is for the candidacies of North Macedonia and Albania to proceed together.

“Finally all obstacles have come to Albania’s EU accession negotiations! North Macedonia’s parliament has given the green light to the EU’s latest proposal. Albania’s senseless hostage situation is over,” Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama wrote in a post your on social media.

Earlier today, the Parliament of North Macedonia voted in favor of the EU’s proposal to find a solution to the country’s differences with Bulgaria.
