The Brazilian stock exchange — the B3 — reached the mark of 5,847,163 investors with shares or other assets in 2022, the highest in 10 years. This number is the total number of accounts, that is, each individual can have more than one, registered with other brokers.
According to the latest B3 survey, the number of individual investors with variable income assets grew by 35% between the 3rd quarter of 2021 and the same period of 2022, from 3.3 million to 4.6 million. Between the second and third quarters of this year, there was an increase of 200,000 investors.
If we compare the number of accounts over the last 10 years, the increase was 895%. At the beginning of the Dilma Rousseff government, in 2012, the number was 587,163 accounts. In 2016, under the government of Michel Temer, the accounts dropped to 564,529, but rose in the following years.
In 2019, under the government of Jair Bolsonaro, the number exceeded one million (1,666,328). Already in 2020, the high of investors was 94%. In 2021, a 54% advance of new accounts was recorded.
In 2022, there were 871 thousand more than in the previous year, a record in B3.
According to Felipe Paiva, director of Customer and Individual Relations at B3, the numbers show that Brazilians continue to seek opportunities and diversify investments, whether in stock exchange or fixed income products.
“These data demonstrate that there is still enormous potential in the country and that millions of people have already started to diversify their portfolio beyond traditional savings. This explains the positive balance and recurring growth in the number of individuals in recent years”, he assesses.

The number of women on the stock exchange was also highlighted. The female presence increased by 58% in the last two years.
Currently, there are 4.5 million male and 1.3 million female investors. In 2021, the female proportion was 23.1%. It dropped to 22.9% in 2022.
According to a B3 report, the gender profile of investors has changed little over the years. Despite the entry of women in recent periods, the proportion between men and women has remained practically constant over the last 10 years.
