The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) seized, on Tuesday (19), several animal parts and limbs, including a baboon head and impaled rats, at Guarulhos Airport.
The action is part of Operation Hermes, in which Ibama works together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Federal Revenue Service. A Nigerian and a Chinese were fined for trying to enter Brazil with materials of animal origin without a favorable technical opinion or environmental license.
According to the institute, some of the seized material has a high potential for introducing diseases into the country, as it arrived fresh and without documentation of origin proving its safety.
In addition to the baboon head and impaled rats, jars of bear bile and the heads of various birds were also found. The operation also seized more than 11,000 ornamental fish at the Guarulhos cargo terminal that would be exported to Taiwan without documentation.
On another front, inspectors intercepted several postal shipments to countries such as the United States, France and Spain. Among the items found, 15 kg of swim bladders and handicrafts made with macaw and parrot feathers, jaguar, alligator and peccary teeth, alligator skulls and stingray tails stand out.
In a statement, Ibama stated that all the seized material was sent for destruction.
