A 42-year-old woman gave birth inside a helicopter that provided assistance due to difficulty leaving the isolated community in Tarumã, rural area of Manaus. The case occurred this Tuesday (5).
The aircraft was from the Integrated Department of Air Operations (Dioa), from the Amazonas Public Security Secretariat (SSP-AM), which was requested by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu).
According to delegate Rafael Montenegro, coordinator of Dioa, the case was notable because it involved a birth inside a helicopter. “We were faced with an unprecedented operation, the baby was born inside our aircraft,” said Rafael.
“Lately, with this extreme drought, we have been in great demand to help populations that are isolated and have difficult access to some resources. Fortunately, Águia 01 has been engaged in the activity and has always performed with excellence”, said João Coelho, lieutenant of the Fire Department, who works at Dioa.
All states in Amazonas are in emergency due to the extreme drought affecting the region. From June until this Tuesday (3), more than 22 thousand fires were fought by the Amazonas Military Fire Brigade (CBMAM). 2,485 fires were in the capital and 19,590 in the interior of the state.
Doctor Larissa Câmara, from Samu, said that carrying out the birth inside the aircraft was an urgent choice. “When we arrived at the scene, the patient was already in advanced labor. We then decided to deliver the baby right there, inside the aircraft. Everything went well, without any complications”, said the doctor.
“The baby was born healthy, crying, active and breastfeeding shortly after. It’s a girl. The mother is fine” said the doctor. The child and mother were taken to the Dona Lindu Women’s Institute, in the center-south area of Manaus.
