Baby Reindeer’s Laverne Cox and Nava Mau Share an Emotional Hug on the 2024 Emmys Red Carpet

How strong sharing the same story can be was shown on the red carpet of the 2024 Emmys, in an emotional moment, Laverne Cox And Nava Mau. Cox, E!’s red carpet host for the evening, couldn’t get more than a word out, as did Mau, nominated in the category best supporting actress in a mini series for Baby Reindeer, before bursting into tears when they said goodbye.

“Ten years ago I was the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy, and ten years later I am no longer the last,” Cox told Mau, “You’re fourth, and you’re first in this category.” The 2014 nomination was in the category of “outstanding guest actress in a comedy series” for her role as Sophia in Orange Is the New Black, role for the Which would be nominated three more times over the course of the series.

«I think the best thing to celebrate is Baby Reindeer is that yes, it is an LGBTQ series, it is a series with a trans character, and it is also a very beautiful series, and that is something that I am very proud of,” Mau said. “And ultimately, I hope we continue to be all that we are as trans people on screen.”

Mau also thanked Cox for helping her feel recognized in the acting world thanks to the Netflix documentary Disclosure of 2020 , which explored the representation of transgender people in pop culture over time. Cox participated in the documentary and Mau worked on it.

“I saw trans people in leadership positions,” Mau said of working on set, “I saw you walk with all your grace and power, and I saw that I could be a bigger dream than I had ever dreamed for myself.”

Cox had words of encouragement and admiration for Mau: “You are making history and you are making us all very proud,” Cox said. Although Mau did not win in his category, Baby Reindeer won several awards throughout the evening, and Mau’s emotional moment with Cox was one of the most indelible.
