Back pain is common, but should be investigated, experts warn

At some point in your life, you have probably felt pain in your lower back, hip or a joint. Despite being a common symptom, it is necessary to be aware of it and seek medical help when the pain is persistent or impacts quality of life. After all, delaying seeking treatment can worsen a condition that would be milder if diagnosed and treated early.

The one who gives the alert is Dr. Roberto Kalil and doctors Giancarlo Polesello, orthopedic specialist in the hip, and Francisco Sampaio, neurosurgeon, specialist in the spine. The two are the guests of “CNN Vital Signs – dr. Kalil Interview ” this Saturday (4), to talk about mobility.

But, after all, what is mobility, in this concept? “It is the ability of human beings to move in a functional and painless way. Climb stairs, sit down, stand up, run, and painlessly throughout your life”, explains Polesello.

When we feel pain when moving, it is common to say that we have done something “bad” to the muscle. However, experts explain that pain is an important symptom to investigate. “We usually tell patients that there is no bad way,” says Sampaio. “Muscle contracture and pain is always a reaction to a problem. It’s the body warning you that something is wrong and imposing a certain limit to prevent further damage from happening”, he adds.

The neurosurgeon also explains that, even those who have not felt back or joint pain for some time, should have medical follow-up. “Anyone who had pain ten years ago is adapted to the problem, but he has the disease,” he says.

Hip pain is common and should be treated

Around 80% of the world's population has had, has or will have back pain. However, this is not the only impediment to the body's mobility. The hip also has a great importance, sometimes underestimated.

“It is through the hip that all loads pass, both longitudinally and transversely. It is where all the loads and forces pass through very strong muscle groups. These groups are subject to injuries, including because they exert force throughout their lives to keep the individual standing. So the hip is the biomechanical center of the body”, says Polesello.

During the program, experts also list the main risk factors for mobility problems, such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture and being overweight. “The human body was not made to sit 12 hours a day,” says Sampaio.

According to him, there is data that shows that when the individual is lying down, the pressure on the intervertebral discs of the spine is 25, while standing is 100. But when we are sitting, the pressure can vary from 180 to 250. “And what What happens to any mechanical system that receives more load than it was designed to receive? He will age before he should”, he adds.

Experts also emphasize that the concern is not limited to adults. “Children today no longer develop their skeleton, joints and muscles. They sit all day on the sofa, in a chair, watching television, using smartphones, computers, video games… Those healthy games of the past, which provided good musculoskeletal and joint development to our organism, no longer exist”, explains the neurosurgeon.

Therefore, experts argue that moving from an early age is essential. Furthermore, at the first sign of pain, seek medical attention.

“CNN Sinais Vitais – Dr. Kalil Interview” will air on Saturday, May 4th, at 7:30 pm, on CNN Brasil.
