Back to school is important for children’s mental and physical health, says pediatrician

The pediatrician and pulmonologist at the Instituto da Criança do Hospital das Clínicas, Karina Pierantozzi Vergani, argues that “there is no current justification” for not returning to school activities in person.

In an interview with CNN, she highlighted that there are several studies that have pointed out that the school environment is not a “super-contagion” environment for Covid-19.

Karina reinforced that there are precautions that need to be taken and the first of them is very simple: that parents take their children to be vaccinated. “You have to follow all the precautions that are already known, hand hygiene, mask use, distancing and mass vaccines for our children.”

The pediatrician also said that the damage to children and adolescents is enormous outside of face-to-face classes. “The problem with the child who stays at home is that it affects mental health, causes depression, anxiety, apart from physical health, with cases of obesity, face-to-face return even in the current scenario of the pandemic is essential.”

“The return is very important for the mental and physical health of children, the lost time will not be recovered, but from now on, there is another scenario, it is not the beginning of the pandemic, which had no vaccination and did not know the disease, we know how the virus behaves”, he added.
