Backblaze releases its first SSD usage report

Data backup company Backblaze has released a new report on the reliability of its drives. In contrast to the HDD report published a month ago, the new report is Backblaze’s first SSD report. Such reports are planned to be published twice a year. As a reminder, HDD statistics reports are published quarterly.

All SSDs included in the report are boot drives on storage servers. Until the fourth quarter of 2018, only HDDs acted in this capacity, but gradually the situation changed. Now SSDs are being installed on all new servers and on all servers in which the boot HDD fails. The service clarifies that boot drives are also used to store logs and temporary files.

As of December 31, 2021, there were 2,200 SSDs in use. The statistics of failures for the year are summarized in the table:

The report’s authors draw attention to the stunning performance of the Crucial CT250MX500SSD1 and Seagate ZA2000CM10002 models. However, they make a reservation that in both cases the number of accumulators and lifetimes are very small, which gives too wide a confidence interval. These drives are included for completeness.

As always, a detailed analysis and background data for self-study is available on the Backblaze website.
