Sony has officially announced that the next-gen PlayStation 5 game console will continue to be in short supply even in 2022.
I don’t think demand will stabilize this year. Even if next year we get more parts and produce more PlayStation 5s, our supply will not be able to meet the demand.
Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki
This means that Sony is not counting on record sales of the PlayStation 5: the company will simply sell all the consoles it can make. Sony released its financial statements at the end of April, stating that 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles had been sold in March as of March 31. The company also announced that it plans to sell at least 14.8 million consoles in the current fiscal year.

As of the end of the 2020 calendar year, the company has sold 4.5 million PlayStation 5 worldwide. This means that between January and March 2021, only 3.3 million new consoles were sold.
In the course of communication with analysts, Sony confirmed that at the moment the main challenge is to meet demand, which significantly exceeds production capacity. Sony, like many other manufacturers, has suffered from a worldwide shortage of semiconductor products.
So far, Sony hasn’t said when shipments should normalize.
