Baghdad recalls its envoy from Ankara

Iraq will recall its charge d’affaires in Ankara for consultations and summon the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad for an explanation after a bombing that killed eight civilians in Iraqi Kurdistan, the government announced tonight.

This decision was taken during a meeting of the National Security Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi.

The Foreign Ministry was instructed to “summon Turkey’s ambassador to Iraq to convey to him” that Baghdad condemns the deadly bombing. Also, the Iraqi chargé d’affaires in Ankara is recalled and the process to appoint a new ambassador to Turkey is interrupted.

The council, which includes the interior, defense and finance ministers, also demanded a formal apology from Turkey and “the withdrawal of its armed forces from all Iraqi territory.”

According to the state news agency INA, Baghdad also plans to protest to the United Nations Security Council.
