I Mysterious Baths it is the most Milanese swimming pool in Milan. It’s trendy, it’s designer, and it has a new bistro with cocktail bar. And it is public, strongly desired by the Milanese, for the Milanese.
HOW IT WAS BORN
In 1934 something happens in Milan that will change it forever. A new master plan is approved that will remodel the city center as well as the suburbs within a decade. These are the years of rationalism and public projects such as the one that started the construction of the current seat of the Franco Parenti Theater and the neighboring Caimi Seaside Center, a multifunctional space. Rooms for fencing, boxing, doctor’s office, library, even a printing house (and the inevitable space for neighborhood lictory organizations), to which pools were added in 1937, designed by one of the main designers of those years, Eng. Lorenzo Secchi. It was a cutting-edge project, where the Milanese went in the summer. Then in 2007 the center is closed and abandoned, even the Pier Lombardo Foundation decides to carry out the redevelopment works at no cost to the citizens, reopen and manage the 15,000 square meters, integrating them with those of the theater to which they are connected.
THE MYSTERIOUS BATHS ARE BORN
When the swimming pool is reopened in 2016, Milan is amazed. The Mysterious Baths, an architectural project with an artistic direction (that of the director of the Theater Andrée Ruth Shammah). In fact, the Foundation brought together intellectuals and personalities from the Milanese salons, ordinary people and neighbors, creating an economic and ideas crowdfunding. Everyone has designed, given, thought up a piece and so from the design bathroom to the garden that surrounds the tub or the splendid roses, everything has an exceptional godfather, between well-known names and famous studios and architects. Everything is studied in detail, there are no sponsored umbrellas and plastic chairs, but an infinite series of details that make it much more than a swimming pool. Even the music was made ad hoc, and there is no danger of hearing the latest summer hit in your ears. Immersed in the center of Milan, with the condominiums overlooking the pool, you will find peace, in silence. The elderly of the area go there to read the newspaper, the couples, some expats, singles (hunting, other than Esselunga in Viale Papiniano), children of course – but the lifeguards go around like Swiss guards to enforce order. The Mysterious Baths are a work of art where you bathe, sunbathe and today, finally, go to lunch and have an aperitif.
APERITIF IN THE POOL, LUNCH AND DINNER
This is Milan, it needs trendy places, and to drink and eat. The economic capital of Italy has a constant hunger, invented happy hour and today it has even become a gastronomic destination. Food (because that’s how it is called in Milan) is part of the city’s identity. And the Mysterious Baths weren’t complete in their redevelopment without a poolside Spritz. In 2021 he thought about it God, which after the openings on the Darsena, under the City Life towers (and other locations around the city), took over the management of the poolside bar restaurant and the terrace above. The fresh and light cuisine sees the advice of the starred chef Stefano Cerveni, who guarantees an excellent standard. From lunch to after dinner there are salads and centrifuges, Italian-style rice-based poké bowls, long-leavening organic focaccias served in wedges, also perfect to divide. Under the pergola and along the rose garden by day, at aperitif time you can expand to 400 seats by the pool, to wait for the sunset in a suggestive secret garden. There is a long list of gintonics and deliberately exotic cocktails, wines and champagne to spend a summer evening.
THE THEATER SHOWS AND THE SUMMER CAMPUS
Lunch, aperitif, dinner, at Gud you can enjoy the sun setting over the city but also the shows organized in collaboration with the Franco Parenti Theater. A nice calendar of outdoor appointments to watch by the pool that continues throughout the summer. Comedians, monologues, shows such as Bedtime Stories for rebel girls with the actress and singer-songwriter Margherita Vicario, accompanied by the Multiethnic Orchestra of Arezzo (13 July) or the dance shows Written on my body (31 August) or Le Sacre con Luciana Savignano (21 September). For children there is the summer camp in the pool during the week. Because the Mysterious Baths are finally back to being a space for everyone.
THE PRICES, MILANESI
The Romano pool, aka the Ponzio, the Argelati and the Saini cost € 7 per day, € 8 per week.end. The Mysterious Baths € 25, € 15 half day. It is more expensive, three times more expensive, but ten times more beautiful.
P.S. Before the lifeguards tell you: you enter only with clean slippers, you do not leave your shoes with the sole resting on the ground, you do not jump, you do not go up and down from the wooden platform. You bathe with a cap and follow the rules. Milan is Milan.
