The Hemoba Foundation changed the rules for blood donation in Bahia. The change, which began in September, changes the waiting period for people who want to donate.
The Foundation, the body responsible for collecting and distributing blood in Bahia, announced an important change in its rules. The waiting time for donors who have tattoos, micropigmentation, permanent makeup or piercings in safe locations has been reduced from 12 to 6 months.
The new measure aims to facilitate blood donation. The expectation is that the change will increase the number of donors and help maintain blood stocks at adequate levels.
However, relaxing the rules does not mean that anyone with a tattoo can donate blood. The procedures must be carried out in studios that strictly follow safety standards. Otherwise, the period of ineligibility for donation remains 12 months.
“We have reduced the deadline to facilitate donations, but it is essential that the procedures follow safety standards”, explains Iêda Oliveira, social worker in the Hemoba fundraising sector.
Last year, 1,566 people were considered unfit to donate blood due to recent tattoos, piercings and/or permanent makeup. In 2024, until August, this number reached 916.
Blood stocks at critical levels
Hemoba is facing a critical moment in relation to its blood stocks, especially for types A+, A-, O+ and O-. The participation of new donors is essential to ensure that patients’ needs are met.
To publicize the news and encourage donations, Hemoba launched the “Before you scratch, come and donate” campaign. The idea is that people donate blood before undergoing any aesthetic procedure that causes temporary disability.
To donate blood, you need:
- Be between 16 and 69 years old
- Weigh more than 50 kg
- Be in good health
- Present a photo ID
- Do not fast, but avoid fatty foods in the 4 hours before donating
- Have not consumed alcohol in the last 12 hours
- Not having smoked in the last 2 hours
