Bahia faces strong winds, drought and fires in five cities

Gale and low humidity warnings for cities in Bahia were issued by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and will last until this Thursday (12).

The low humidity warning affects 16 other Brazilian states and dozens of cities, but in Bahia, the western part of the state is the one that suffers. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the ideal level for health is for relative humidity to be between 50% and 60%. In this region, it can vary between 20% and 12%.

The region is still facing a dry period, marked by high temperatures. In some cities, temperatures could reach 35ºC in the next few hours.

The combination of low humidity and high temperatures leaves vegetation drier, significantly increasing the risk of fires, which have already affected this same region for some months.

THE CNN the Fire Department stated that at least five cities have registered fire outbreaks and they are: Barreiras, Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Muquém do São Francisco, Baianópolis and Santa Rita de Cássia.

Operation Florestal 2024 began in Bahia in July. Currently, there are around 150 military firefighters dedicated exclusively to the service performed at the Forest Bases. 290 fires were fought, in addition to 728 preventive guidelines being carried out in the state.

Inmet recommends that, under these conditions, the population should drink plenty of fluids; avoid physical exertion during the driest hours; also avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day and, if necessary, obtain more information from Civil Defense (199) and the Fire Department (193).
