The state of Bahia reported six cases of botulism this year, a serious disease caused by the ingestion of contaminated food. According to the Health Department, two people died, and of the notifications relating to 2024, five were confirmed and one remains under investigation.
An epidemiological investigation revealed that four of the five patients diagnosed with the disease had eaten chicken mortadella the day before the onset of symptoms.
Confirmed cases of the disease were registered in the cities of Campo Formoso, Senhor do Bonfim, Salvador and Cícero Dantas.
According to the department, three cases are of patients who remain hospitalized at the Couto Maia Institute, in Salvador, and one of them has already been discharged. Two died, one in Campo Formoso and one in the capital of Bahia.
According to the Health Secretary, botulism is characterized by the presence of acute flaccid paralysis, which affects the motor neurons of the central nervous system. In addition, symptoms such as blurred vision and dry mouth are characteristic of the disease.
The agency highlighted that in the state, from 2014 to 2023, 16 suspected cases of botulism were registered and that three cases were confirmed by clinical-epidemiological criteria. One case was confirmed in 2019 and two in 2023, in the Southwest and Central-East Health Macroregions.
