A military police officer from Bahia was arrested in Curitiba (PR), during a joint operation by the civil police of Paraná and Bahia, carried out on Thursday (9). The PM is suspected of being part of a criminal organization responsible for extortion through kidnapping, drug trafficking and money laundering, a scheme that generated around R$150 million in the last three years.
According to Paraná Civil Police Chief Rodrigo Brown, the victims were subjected to threats and extreme violence, with deaths in some cases, while the criminal group demanded high ransom values for their release. The profits obtained from the kidnappings were then laundered and reinvested in various illicit activities, such as drug trafficking and the acquisition of luxury goods.
“The investigations revealed a scheme of division of functions between the members of the organization, including the participation of security agents, who helped in the planning and execution of crimes”, explained the delegate.
During the investigations, the police discovered that the officer was trying to infiltrate the port of Paranaguá, on the coast of Paraná, probably to facilitate international drug trafficking. At the time of his arrest, the PM was participating in a selection process to work at the site.
The operation involved around 200 police officers and more than 100 bank accounts linked to the organization were blocked. The action also resulted in the seizure of weapons, such as a .38 caliber revolver and a pistol, as well as ammunition, electronics, documents and a total of R$42,620 and US$1,500 in cash. Luxury goods, including cars such as a BMW, a Range Rover Evoque and a Mercedes, were also confiscated.
In addition to the PM, six other arrest warrants were served. In Salvador, five suspects were arrested, in actions in Candeias, Lauro de Freitas, Dias D’Ávila and Camaçari. In addition to Bahia and Paraná, investigations took place in other states, such as São Paulo, Ceará and Amazonas.
According to the Civil Police of Paraná, with the support of specialized departments, investigations continue to identify others involved and track down more assets of the criminal organization.
THE CNN sought the Military Police of Bahia to check whether any proceedings had been initiated against the military police officer arrested by the Civil Police of Paraná and are awaiting a response from the body.
