In the first 10 months of 2023, Bahia recorded a record number of rifle seizures. There were 51 weapons obtained between January and October, according to information released by the Public Security Secretariat (SSP-BA).
The number is the highest in history and, in all seizures, intelligence work guided the security forces in repressing the crimes, according to SSP-BA.
The biggest seizures of rifles this year took place during actions in peripheral neighborhoods of Salvador, such as Tancredo Neves, Calabar and Valéria.
The Secretary of Public Security, Marcelo Werner, emphasizes that, in addition to the rifles, “there are more than 4,000 weapons taken from the hands of organized crime. The reduction in violent deaths in 2023 is the result of the tireless work of police officers,” he said.
Two of the seized rifles were found by security forces last Saturday (21) after persecuting inmates in Salvador. Seven prisoners managed to escape from the Mata Escura Penitentiary Complex.
In the action, which took place around noon, rifles, pistols, ballistic vests and around 3,000 ammunition were seized from the group that would support the escape. Twenty criminals were thwarted by the Military Police.
A pursuit was initiated, with support from the Air Group (Graer), but accomplices were already waiting for the detainees in two vehicles, close to Avenida Gal Costa.
A CNN the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization (Seap) confirmed that seven inmates managed to escape and abandoned their weapons.
Among the fugitives are leaders of a criminal faction that operates in Bahia, accused of trafficking and homicides. Visits are suspended indefinitely in the unit.
