Baikal will test the assembly of processors in Russia: it is cheaper and more reliable

Today, November 29, the information publication “RBK”, citing its sources, reported that the company “Baikal Electronics”, which manufactures Russian processors Baikal, plans to launch the process of installing microcircuits into the processor case (packaging) in a test mode at the GS Group plant in Kaliningrad area. Unfortunately, at the moment, Andrei Evdokimov, the general director of the company, does not say what kind of assembly volumes in Russia are in question – he only emphasized that the manufacturer is now testing the technology in an experimental mode.

The fact is that the Russian company Baikal Electronics develops microcircuits and full-fledged systems based on ARM and MIPS architectures, but the Taiwanese TSMC factory, which is the world’s largest manufacturer, produces these microcircuits for future processors. The assembly of Baikal processors was also carried out in foreign factories, but now they decided to launch this process in Russia.

“Packaging is one of those technological processes that can be transferred to the territory of the country, thereby generating most of its added value within Russia,” said Andrey Evdokimov.

Moreover, in the foreseeable future, the management of the company “Baikal Electronics” plans to transfer to the territory of Russia and the very production of the case for the processors. It should be noted that this is a rather complicated process, which, according to the CEO, is comparable to the production of a microcircuit. And as a result, assembling a processor at a Russian plant will be much cheaper than using foreign production facilities. However, Baikal Electronics does not yet say how much cheaper it is – apparently, it is too early, since the tests are only planned to be launched.
