Baku says ready for peace talks with Armenia without ‘Western mediation’

His Foreign Ministry Azerbaijan invited her today Armenia to take part in peace talks which he said could be held at the border of the two countries or at another location. In a statement, the ministry called on Armenia to “avoid unnecessary delays” and resume negotiations.

“The responsibility for the continuation of the peace process, including the choice of a mutually acceptable place, or the decision to meet at the state border, belongs to both sides,” the ministry said, as reported by APE-MPE. Earlier, foreign policy adviser to the Azeri president Ilham Aliyev he told Reuters that talks should take place on a bilateral basis, without the need for Western mediation. In the past, the European Union and the United States have tried, without success, to persuade the two sides to reach a peace agreement.

After three decades of conflict since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan is in a strong position to secure a win-win settlement after Baku recaptured the Karabakh region in September, where Armenians enjoyed de facto independence after secession in early 1990s.
