Balmoral: what Queen Elizabeth’s vacation home looks like

After a year of pandemic, destroyed by the death of her husband Prince Philip, and court scandals, Queen Elizabeth is ready to move in well in advance in the most beloved of the private residences of the British Crown: Balmoral Castle, Scotland.

A 20,000-hectare estate, Balmoral was purchased by Prince Albert for his wife, Queen Victoria, in 1852, and immediately became the home of the summer vacation of the British royals. The whole family arrives every year in August, but in this very special moment Elisabetta has decided to anticipate the times: should arrive already in a few weeks, thus following in the footsteps of his great-grandmother Vittoria, who in castello Scottish retired after the untimely death of her husband, at just 42 years old.

The Daily Mail, explaining that Elizabeth could be accompanied by her niece Lady Sarah Chatto, the youngest daughter of Princess Margaret. It is not known whether he will stay there forever or will just stay in the Scottish castle for the summer, what is certain is that he will stay at the Craigowan Lodge, the same in which Charles and Diana spent their honeymoon – according to the well-informed days already very eventful in which the princess felt neglected by her husband – and above all the refuge of Elizabeth herself and Prince Philip who spent the best days of their summers alone in the cottage.

Just over a kilometer from Balmoral Castle, the Craigowan Lodge is far less princely, even if it is by no means small: all in stone, there are “just” 7 rooms. It is normally used by the royal family in the periods when the estate is open to tourists, because it is far from prying eyes and also for this reason it ensures absolute peace.

For this season Balmoral will be open for visits until August 2nd, and – unlike what has just happened at Buckhingham Palace, which for the first time in history has opened for “free” visits and picnics – it will be possible to visit its usual spaces. First of all the gardens with rare species, wonderful fountains, Victorian greenhouses and the vegetable garden wanted by Prince Philip whose fruits are collected during the period of stay of the royal family, then the Garden Cottage where Queen Victoria often stopped to have breakfast and write her diaries, and there Ballroom: the only room inside the castle open to visitors where there are relics such as paintings and statues, and where, above all, every year the Ghillie Ball is held, the social event in which the castle staff meets the royal family. Will the queen take her walks in the meantime? They are one of the things she loves to do the most in Balmoral: one year she also found herself face to face with tourists, who however did not recognize her.
