Baltic states may ban Russian ships from docking in their ports

The three Baltic states may ban Russian ships from docking in their ports if a decision at European Union level is hampered, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonite told a news conference today.

The BNS news agency reported earlier today that the Lithuanian government plans to ban mooring on ships flying the Russian flag or having any other connection to Russia, its citizens or companies.

The government later said it would postpone the decision nationally, as a proposal was made to the European Commission to impose the ban across the EU.

“If there is a bigger debate (about a ban across the EU), then we would propose to implement it in coordination with the neighbors (Baltic countries). We agreed in principle,” Simonite said, referring to neighboring Estonia and Latvia.
