Balzac syndrome: how to reduce the double chin with surgery and aesthetic medicine

The double chin represents one of the most annoying imperfections, in third place, after dark circles and sagging of the skin of the face. The emotional impact is such that for two out of three adults this is a major concern, when they think about their outward appearance.

And if for half of them it is a displeasure, the other half expresses something concrete desire to be able to do something about it to correct the annoying imperfection composed of localized fat deposits that the skin is no longer able to support or loss of tone and firmness of the tissues (or both).

The outward appearance is in fact the business card with which we present ourselves to the world, and the 78% of adults it relies on that to evaluate one’s own beauty and that of others. Self-esteem and social acceptance therefore appear to be tied in a double way to this reality. This is what emerges from ainternational survey performed on 7,700 adults from Allergan.

It is therefore not surprising that requests from the cosmetic surgeon increase to cancel what experts have renamed the ‘Balzac syndrome‘, referring to the physical appearance of the famous French writer of the 1800s who had an accentuated double chin.

And not even celebrities are exempt from the signs of aging visible on their skin and body, so much so that they ask for retouching with photoshop when the double chin is evident from the photos taken.

But in addition to creating discomfort from an aesthetic point of view, the double chin is also likely to cause psycho-physical imbalances: the reduction in the passage of inspired air in the upper airways, due to excess adipose, can in fact be responsible for poor concentration, drowsiness, headaches and arterial hypertension disorders. A blemish, therefore, not to be underestimated also for our health.

But what are they the causes of double chin? They are different and often combine with each other. From genetic component – even thin and fit people can inherit the problem from their family – at the age, which brings with it a physiological sagging of muscles and skin. Until the overweight, in turn, caused by an unbalanced diet. Without forgetting, finally, the posture, which can contribute to greatly aggravate the imperfection (even in the youngest).

It has been shown, in fact, that whoever spends many hours at the computer or who sleeps with a double pillow undergoes an abnormal lowering of the chin towards the sternum, which risks making the skin relax, developing the so-called “parrot” over time.

Keeping the head reclined for hours causes premature aging of the skin of the neck and décolleté and this happens mainly because the neck is made up of skin that is much thinner compared to other parts of the body and it is an area devoid of glands. This consequently creates unfavorable conditions for the tone of the tissues, their oxygenation and cell renewal.

Numerous researches have also documented that the water retention in the body it is often connected with the rounder face and the double chin. Alcohol, sugar and salt are the main foods that cause it, and this water can very easily be stored right under the chin.

If, therefore, the response of the mirror leaves no room for doubt, what can we do? Diet, ad hoc massages e facial gymnastics they can certainly provide valuable support. But if we look for one definitive solution then we must turn to surgery and to medicine and cosmetic surgery that offer more or less invasive protocols to solve the problem.
