Bangladesh: At least 23 dead after ferry boat sinks in river

At least 23 people drowned and dozens are missingafter sinking a ship in its river Bangladesh.

The victims include many women and childrensaid Jahurul Islam, the district commander of Panchagarh province, where the wreck occurred.

“The operation to rescue the missing, with the participation of firefighters and divers, continues”he added.

Islam said that does not know the exact number of missing persons. But rescued passengers said more than 70 people were on board.

Hundreds of people die each year in maritime accidents in Bangladesh, a country with an extensive water network but without strict safety regulations. In May, at least 26 people drowned when an overcrowded speedboat collided with a cargo ship carrying sand and sank in the Padma River.
