At least 25 people have been killed in a giant fire that continues unchecked at a container storage facility in Sitakunda, southeast Bangladesh, according to a new death toll released by a health official.
“Twenty-five people have been killed in the blaze, including five firefighters. The toll is likely to be even heavier,” he said. This official, Hassan Sahriar, is an agency.
The fire broke out yesterday Saturday at 21:30 (local time; at 18:30 Greek time) in a private container storage facility, about 40 kilometers from the main port of Chittagong.
According to the fire brigade, while hundreds of people tried to put out the fire, about an hour after the fire broke out, several containers containing chemicals exploded, causing dozens of casualties among the intervention forces.
The force of the blasts was such that buildings were shaken for miles.
The blast also injured at least 170 people, including 40 firefighters and 10 police officers, according to Chittagong police chief Anwar Hosseini.
Bangladeshi media earlier reported that the casualties could reach as many as 300.
Many of the containers contained clothes worth several million dollars, which were to be exported to retail chains in Western countries, said Muminur Rahman, the governor of Chittagong.
