In the nine months of this year, nearly 1,500 pyramid schemes were discovered, with more than half using digital assets to raise funds.
Of all financial pyramids, 97% of companies operated on the Internet, experts of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation say. The Russian regulator assured that financial pyramids are promptly identified, and their websites are blocked. Of the 1,500 pyramid schemes identified, 782 companies used cryptocurrencies in their work. At the same time, scammers are trying to change their methods in order to go unnoticed longer:
“The Bank of Russia published information about such organizations in a warning list on its website. Moreover, if at the beginning of the year after blocking the main resource, fraudsters created duplicate sites in 42% of cases, then in the third quarter – already in 36% of cases. Fraudsters, knowing this, are trying to actively create new resources, post information about themselves on other portals.
Under other portals, the regulator means the use of social networks, instant messengers and other platforms where scammers lure victims.
Recall that in the first quarter of the year, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation identified 403 pyramid schemes, of which 233 companies were associated with cryptocurrencies.
