The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, said that financial institutions that are used to open orange accounts will be held responsible for fraud and scams that use them. According to him, the measure is part of actions to combat banking and financial crimes, as well as guarantee the safety of Pix.
“We are tightening as much as possible so that banks are not able to host an orange or intermediary account. We are even starting to make a process in which banks will be held responsible if a Pix fraud is carried out and they have an orange account”, he said in a public hearing at the Consumer Protection Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
For Campos Neto, the digitalization of the financial and payment systems facilitates the reduction of the number of frauds. “It’s much easier to do non-digital fraud than digital: I can walk the money path efficiently,” he argued.
He stressed that the process of combating fraud is long, but that the BC has advanced on the subject, mainly by starting to map the receiving accounts and putting pressure on the banks used to open fake accounts. “When a fraud is committed on Pix, you need to have a receiving account. If I come to you and ask for a Pix, one of two: the person is Pixing my account and will have all my data there. In that case, it’s easy to get arrested. Another option is to be doing it for an orange, intermediate account,” he noted.
In the view of the head of the monetary authority, the increase in fraud with the economic opening and the emergence of Pix is important, but possible to be addressed.
