Banned slimming drugs are linked to death and health damage

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) released earlier this month a list of 140 slimming capsules banned in Brazil. A few days earlier, a 42-year-old nurse had died of fulminant hepatitis caused by the use of an herbal weight-loss compound that was sold unauthorized in the country.

One of the factors that contributes to the misuse of illegal slimming products is the search for an idealized vision of the perfect body. In some cases, the pressure to conform to an aesthetic standard influences behaviors that, in more severe cases, turn into disease: eating disorders.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an alert about the damage to health attributed to slimming drugs banned by Anvisa and sold illegally in Brazil. To describe the risks of these drugs and the fight against eating disorders, the hepatologist Raymundo Paraná, a professor at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), the endocrinologist Maria Edna de Melo and the journalist and writer Daiana Garbin participated in this episode.
