Banning cars with combustion engines is good for health and climate, says expert

The commitment signed by the city of São Paulo at COP26, the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, to ban the sale of new cars with combustion engines as of 2035 is “great news” for the professor of the atmospheric sciences department from the University of São Paulo (USP), Maria de Fátima Andrade.

In an interview with CNN this Thursday (11), she explained that, in São Paulo, “the vehicle fleet is responsible for most of the emission of pollutants and more than 60% of the emission of greenhouse gases.”

“There are gains on two fronts: in air quality and to avoid the emission of gases. It is an important step”, he said. The alternative, once the agreement is fulfilled, according to the professor, is electrification.

“We have to think about vehicles and buses, including electric cars in the fleet is very important.” “Fossil fuel will run out and it is necessary to look for alternatives for mobility”, he added.
