In June, Microsoft announced that it plans to curtail its activities in Russia to a minimum. Almost simultaneously with this, the Russians lost the ability to download Windows images from the official website – according to media reports, the download only starts when using a VPN. During the Innoprom International Industrial Exhibition, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Vasily Shpak said that Microsoft’s departure is a positive step for domestic developers. This is reported by TASS.
According to Mr. Shpak, in the future, domestic software producers will be able to occupy and gain a foothold in new market segments. With increased demand, the competitiveness of Russian solutions will greatly increase, and this, together with feedback from consumers, will make it possible to make a breakthrough in improving the quality of their software.
The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade noted that Russian operating systems already exist: Astra, Viola, Red OS, and Kaspersky Lab is even developing its own, not based on Linux.
Among other things, Vasily Shpak said that the curtailment of Microsoft’s activities will not affect the increase in pirated copies of Windows.
