THE New York Post published the former president’s letter Barack Obama who wrote – according to historian David Garrow – to his ex-girlfriend about his own “androgynous” mind in which he can “make love to men every day”.
The letter was written in November 1982 to Alex McNear.
In June 2023, the historian, who is known for creating the extensive 1,472-page biography “Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama”, revealed in an interview that the former US president, on many occasions, entertained fantasies for personal meetings with men.
“As far as homosexuality is concerned, I have to say that I think this is an attempt to move away from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life. You see, I make love to men everyday but in my imagination,” wrote the then-21-year-old Barack Obama to Alex McNear in November 1982.
“My mind is largely androgynous and I hope to be able to think in terms of “humans” rather than “women as opposed to men”. But, returning to my body, I see that I have been made a man and physically in life, I choose to accept this possibility“, he added.
Alex McNear, who she dated Obama when he attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, later released the letter to the media, which the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian included in his book, Rising Star.
The letter is currently owned by Emory University, which does not allow photography or retrieval. However, historian Garrow’s friend Harvey Klehr wrote the paragraphs by hand and sent them to the author.
Yes, Klehr also provided the letter to the New York Post, while a spokesman for the former president did not respond to a request for comment.
For his part, historian David Garrow commented that there was nothing unusual about Obama’s youthful thoughts. “I’m a historian, not a psychologist, but I think the (vast?) majority of people have sexual fantasies!” he emphasized.
