Barack Obama speaks at the Democratic Convention

Barack Obama, former US President and key ally of President Joe Biden, is speaking on the second day of the Democratic National Convention, which takes place this Tuesday (20) in Chicago.

He received a standing ovation as he entered the stage, noting that it was “good to be home” and that he was feeling hopeful.

After praising Kamala Harris, Barack stressed that he made the right decision in choosing Joe Biden as his vice president. “What I admired most about Joe was not just his experience, it was his empathy and decency. And his resilience,” he said.

“History will remember Joe Biden as an exceptional president who stood up for democracy at a time of great peril. I am proud to call him ‘my president,’ but even more proud to call him ‘my friend,’” he said. The crowd then chanted “thank you, Joe.”

Barack Obama also stressed that the “torch has been passed,” but warned that it will be a tight election race in a divided country.

The former president endorsed Kamala Harris’s candidacy for president after Biden dropped out. Michelle Obama also endorsed the US vice president for the 2024 race.

The formalization of support took place with a call between the Obama and Harris couple.

Before Barack, Michelle gave an energetic speech at the convention, emphasizing that “hope is returning.” At several points, she received standing ovations and applause from the audience.

The former first lady also introduced her husband to the stage.

Attacks on Trump

Barack Obama also attacked Donald Trump, saying he is afraid of losing to Kamala Harris.

“The truth is that Donald Trump sees power as a means to his ends,” he added.
