‘Barbie’ Makes History, Crosses $1 Billion at the Box Office

“Barbie” answered the billion dollar question with a resounding “yes”. In just three weeks of showing, director-writer Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster has grossed a staggering $1.03 billion at the global box office, according to official estimates from Warner Bros.

This makes Gerwig the first female director with a billion-dollar film.

As one half of the “Barbenheimer” viral phenomenon, it is not shocking that “Barbie” have done well. The incredible success of the Mattel doll movie is not unexpected.

“I’ve been in this game for 30 years and the Barbie and Barbenheimer phenomenon is as unprecedented as it is unpredictable,” he said. Paul Dergarabedian senior media analyst at Comscore.

According to Dergarabedian, only about 50 films in history, unadjusted for inflation, have reached the billion dollar mark. He added that the film’s marketing campaign was the first indication that “Barbie” would be a box office hit.

“The marketing campaign for ‘Barbie’ set in motion a chain of events that led to the word ‘Barbenheimer’ being added to the popular lexicon by virtue of its shared release date with ‘Oppenheimer’, and that’s when we all knew that something very special and unique would create a much bigger than expected result for the film, not only in its opening weekend, but also in its global theatrical run.”

In an interview with Collider last month, Margot Robbie – who produced and starred in the film – shared a premonition she had in a meeting with the studios.

“I think I told them they were going to make a billion dollars, which maybe I was exaggerating, but we had a movie to make!” she said.
