After his conversation with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, US President Joe Biden plans to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, according to a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
According to the White House, Biden wants to address the deployment of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border.
Another issue is the planned talks between Moscow and Washington, which are expected to help defuse the conflict in Ukraine.
Zelensky announced on Twitter that the goal was to agree on common positions “for peace in Ukraine and security in Europe.”
Biden had been on the phone with Putin for almost an hour on Thursday. The White House initially did not give an exact time for the phone call with Zelensky.
Diplomats from Russia and the United States are scheduled to meet in Geneva on January 9th and 10th.
NATO is also planning a meeting with the Russian side on January 12. The next day, a meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will take place.
The United States has been accusing Russia of massive military deployment in areas bordering Ukraine for weeks.
There are fears that Russian troops could invade the former Soviet republic. Moscow denies such plans. In 2014, Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of the Crimean Black Sea. He also supports separatists in the Kremlin in eastern Ukraine, according to the same publication.
