“Barred at the Ball”: actress with cancer says she doesn’t date because she has an “expiration date”

Shannen Doherty actress known for her work on the series “Barred at the Dance” said that it is difficult to date because, at 53 years old, she is facing stage four breast cancer. She opened up about the subject during an interview.

Speaking to Kelly Ripa on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Doherty admitted that she is a “very hard sell”. “I think it’s hard for someone like me, in my opinion, because it’s hard to date someone when you know that they might have an expiration date.”

Furthermore, she commented that “most men” do not “deal with death and illness as well as women,” which, according to her, would complicate the situation.

During the chat, the actress also shared that she feels like “a guinea pig on a wheel”. “You keep spinning the wheel and hope your protocol lasts a long time and you get the most out of it. But inevitably, one protocol will stop working and then you will have to move on to the next one.”

Earlier this year, Brenda’s portrayer on the series shared that she was planning her own funeral and was already selling her belongings to make her mother’s life easier when she dies.

Cancer and metastasis

The star was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, which went into remission two years later. In 2020, Shannen announced that the disease had returned, this time affecting her brain.

In an emotionally charged interview, the eternal Brenda from the hit 1990s series revealed, in November 2023, that the cancer, now in stage four, had migrated to her bones. Despite the challenging prognosis, she keeps the flame of hope alive.

“I do not wanna die. I’m not done living. I’m not done loving. I haven’t finished creating yet. I’m not done changing things for the better yet. I simply didn’t finish,” said the actress in an interview with People.

Shannen explained that her spirituality and faith motivate her to continue fighting and clarified that her terminal illness does not force her to give up on life.
