It had caused disgust a few days ago Guatemala prison terror incident beheads six detainees. The victims are members of the two most famous and eternal rival gangs that dominate Latin America, Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha.
But who is the Barrio 18? It is one of the largest criminal gangs in Los Angeles, with 30,000 to 50,000 members between the United States, Mexico and Central America, and is also an ally of the Mexican mafia. A report by the United States Department of Justice listed Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha’s rival as “the two gangs that have turned the North American triangle into the region with the highest homicide rate in the world.”

Although started as a Mexican gang, the Barrio 18 quickly became dominant in Central America as it began to include more members from other ethnic groups. It is known as one of the most violent gangs in Central America and is a constant rival of Mara Salvatrucha, world MS-13, as both gangs wanted to take control of the area.
Its members gang are required to comply with a strict set of rules, failure to follow a leader’s speech can lead to 18-second beatings or even execution for more serious offenses, and according to the FBI, some of its teams have developed a high level of complexity and organization.

Most admirable of all, however, is the presentation of its members, who are often identified with the number 18 on their clothes and sportswear by sports teams. Their colors are blue and black, with blue paying tribute to the Mexican mafia and black being the main color of the gang, while its characteristic symbols are XV3, XVIII, X8, 666, 99 (9 + 9 = 18) and 3-dots on their graffiti and tattoos. Finally, the tattoos on the face of its members cause horror and terror, with a characteristic large 18, which most of the time covers the whole face.
On average, someone in Los Angeles County is attacked or robbed by a Barrio 18 member every day, with the gang stigmatizing Los Angeles daily with blood at three times the rate of the rest of the city’s most active gangs.
